The second round of the NBA playoffs is in full swing. Games are underway, Charles Barkley is placing bets, and fans are Tweeting. We tracked tweets for the Suns vs. Spurs game last night to analyze activity and the impact of the “Los Suns” uniforms - a political statement targeting the recent Arizona immigration law.
The Suns won the Twitter battle as well as the actual game. In addition, the political message seems to have taken hold – 25% of the “Suns” tweets inlcuded “Los Suns.”
There was a clear spike in activity at the final buzzer. Suns fans celebrated and Spurs fans mourned. These immediate post-game reactions drew a big spike in volume. We saw this same trend in our rounder 1 analysis of Lakers vs. Thunder Twitter data.
Celebrities, Athletes, Journalists, and Political figures were present in the Suns vs. Spurs Twitter stream. This includes the Whitehouse, Jordin Sparks, Baron Davis, Bill Simmons, Larry Fitzgerald, Jimmy Eat World, and of course, Eva Longoria. There were a total of 16 Twitter handles with over 100K followers in our dataset.
At the Suns game hoping to see them guys go up 2-0 in the series
