Social Media Sings for Glee

If you’re like me, you’ve starting seeing a bunch of Tweets and Facebook posts about Glee on Tuesdays. If the trend continues, there will be ~350,000 Tweets and Facebook posts about the show today. We were curious, just how big is Glee in social media? We started tracking the show leading up to the premiere and have continued monitoring Twitter and Facebook posts. TV shows tend to draw a ton of conversation online as anticipation grows, during the show, and as viewers react the next day. In the past we looked at the Jersey Shore, MTV’s reality sensation, and we decided to use it as a comparison point for Glee. Bottom line: Glee absolutely crushes it in social media. Heck, on Tuesdays, Glee is drawing in 6 time more posts than pizza and beer combined.

What is particularly interesting about Glee is the staying power the show had after the premiere. Just comparing Glee to Jersey Shore really draws out this trajectory. Jersey Shore had a huge concentration of posts on the day of the premiere, but dropped off the next day, and had 61% fewer posts on episode 2 vs. episode 1. Glee actually saw more posts on the day of episode 2 vs. episode 1. This suggests that Glee started with strong hype and has stayed strong. We’ll keep tracking it tonight and see if this trend continues.
