Every PR department wants more Twitter followers, especially when those followers are top bloggers, journalists, and major media outlets. Through an analysis of Representative Anthony Weiner’s Twitter audience, we’ve discovered that having a political scandal is the most efficient way to build this influential base of followers. Representative Weiner had ~40K followers before his recent DM fail and ensuing scandal. His Twitter audience has skyrocketed to over 70K (and climbing). Being elected to U.S. Congress didn’t get people listening, but the recent political scandal drew some of the top names in the media world. Take a look at the top new followers of @RepWeiner and just how fast his audience has grown. It’s also worth noting that his new followers seem to be a more influential cohort. His latest followers have an average of 642 followers themselves, compared to 538 amongst the old group.
