When we first launched Excel-based reports, it sounded a little crazy. Every other modern analytics software tries to get you out of Excel, telling you it’s flawed and you should change your ways. We did the opposite. Over 500 million people use Excel for a reason — it’s incredibly flexible, powerful, and ubiquitous. We decided to use a simple web interface to connect with reports, organize data, and store projects, but keep all the data crunching and report building inside Excel. In other words, we created a “web to Excel” work flow. It turns out this idea resonated because it was familiar, it was flexible, and because it gave you complete control over data analysis and presentation.
Nearly a year ago, we started talking about ways to put Excel on steroids. It is the gold standard for analysis, but we saw an opportunity to extend the work you do in Excel to other mediums. We hunkered down and developed a technology that renders interactive web-based charts directly from what you create in Excel. In other words, we built an “Excel to web” work flow. In this paradigm you can keep crunching data in Excel, but leverage the web for easy sharing and consumption. The web version isn’t just “like” your Excel charts — it’s a perfect 1-to-1 rendering. This means that any marketer with Excel skills can build web dashboards. These reports can even be viewed on your iPad. So one minute an analyst or marketer can tweak an Excel file, publish to their Simply Measured account. And in the next minute an executive can be flipping through charts on her iPad. For the icing, we also made it easy to export finished products to PowerPoint.
This is the start of a very big evolution for Simply Measured. It’s an exciting step for us, but it’s also just the beginning. The next step is extending this vision based on your reactions. We hope you are as excited as we are and we look forward to working with you to make the world of analytics and reporting a better, happier place.
