Today is the 5th Annual Social Media Day! Yes, that’s a thing… and why wouldn’t it be? Over the past several years, social media has become something to celebrate. In 2010, Mashable launched this event to “recognize the digital revolution happening right before our eyes.” Since 2010, social media has given birth to a new booming marketing industry.
Social media has changed businesses fundamentally, from marketing through sales to support and even internal communication, social media now touches every aspect of our business lives. Asking if a business does social media is like asking kids if they play. The answer is always ‘duh.’ – Uri Bar-Joseph, Director of Marketing at Simply Measured
Prior to social media, brands struggled to spread their brand’s message and content. Our brand new Director of Content, Bridget Quigg, says, “A great guidebook can get lost in a dark corner gathering dust until it gets exposure on social media. Social media helps content make an impact.” This dependance on social media has fueled our company’s growth and success, so it’s only right that we pay tribute in the best way we know how — with data.
Tracking #SMDay Conversation
To analyze #SMDay’s impact, we first wanted to figure out where the majority of the conversation around the day were happening. By using our Keyword Stream Snapshot Report, I was able to see which networks are hotbeds for #SMDay conversations. It’s overwhelmingly obvious that the vast majority of people are taking to Twitter to celebrate.
#SMDay: 20K+ Twitter Mentions & 51M+ Potential Impressions
The conversation around #SMDay has certainly picked up as the day goes on. With an impressive 20K+ mentions already, we expect to see this number jump as the west coast gets more involved. Potential Impressions is another story… Those numbers are massive already!
With help from giants like Mashable, CMT and the AMA, #SMDay is off to a great start. With 51M+ potential impressions only halfway through the day and an average of 3.9M impressions per hour, it’s possible that this might be the biggest #SMDay on social yet.
#SMDay’s Top Cities
Social Media Day is celebrated across the globe, but which cities are the most enthused about this new holiday? New York commandingly takes the lead, owning about 9.5% of all the #SMDay related Tweets. DC, Chicago, LA and Tampa follow. Did your city crack the top 10? We’re disappointed, Seattle. Step it up!
Social Media Day is only halfway over, so we can expect all of these numbers to grow even more. For myself, as a marketer, the value in social media can’t be overstated. The ability to listen, learn and converse with your audience is of the utmost importance and social media is the go-to platform for that. Happy Social Media Day from Simply Measured!
