Here are the social stats we’re mulling over this week.
1. 93.2% of US bloggers rely on social media marketing to drive traffic
According to a recent eMarketer article, US bloggers rely most on social marketing to drive traffic.
This is definitely a reminder to make sure your social team and your content creators are working as closely as possible. It’s also something to keep in mind when you’re looking for influencers: pick people who have strong blog visits and strong social presences.
2. Instant messaging is more popular than social media in the APAC
According to a recent eConsultancy roundup post, messaging has surpassed social media in popularity in the Asia-Pacific.
APAC mobile-first markets showed particularly high daily usage of instant messaging. China (69%) and Malaysia (77%) stand in stark contrast to the UK (39%) and the US (35%).
If your brand is active in the APAC, finding ways to integrate your social channels with messaging apps will become more and more vital in the coming year.
3. 71% of businesses will be using Instagram in two years
An AdWeek roundup citing eMarketer predicted that 32% of U.S. companies with 100 employees or more will use Instagram for marketing this year, and this number will jump to 71 percent in 2017. Another hot prediction? Instagram may be more popular with marketers than Twitter in two years.
This statistic is important to consider if you haven’t done your due diligence and experimented with Instagram as a viable channel for your brand.
4. Pinterest now has 60 million buyable pins
Pinterest now has 60 million buyable pins, allowing users to buy directly from retailers like
Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, and Neiman Marcus.
The company also recently announced The Pinterest Shop, where people can find trendy collections of buyable pins, handpicked by Pinterest.
Pinterest is increasing its efforts to become a shoppable ecommerce destination, just in time for the big retail holidays like Black Friday and Christmas. This is an important development to consider if you’re a retail brand who wants to see a direct link between social efforts and sales numbers.
5. Facebook drove 35% of socially referred traffic to Etsy last year
While Facebook drove 67% of all socially referred e-commerce traffic last year, according to SimilarWeb, it only drove a little over 35% of social referral traffic to Etsy.
This puts Facebook neck-in-neck competition with Pinterest and Reddit for social referral traffic to Etsy.
If your brand sells items on Etsy, consider devoting resources to Reddit, Pinterest, and Facebook as your primary channels for social referrals.
6. 76% of B2B buyers use three or more channels for research
Statistics from Blue Nile Research’s latest report indicate that B2B buyers visit far more than one source when trying to make a buying decision.
While the social and mobile categories show very little impact on buyer behavior, Blue Nile researchers said,“…marketers should not base their investment in these channels solely on this data since it describes buyer behavior in the interest, consideration, conversion stages of the buying journey and does not accurately reflect top of the funnel behavior.”
If you’re a B2B brand, focus on using your active social channels for brand awareness and education rather than sales-oriented content.
7. BMW is the top automotive brand on Twitter
Technology and data company Engagement Labs (EL) today released rankings on the top automotive brands in the U.S., on social media and through offline, word of mouth conversations.
BMW ranked highest on Twitter, while Chevrolet Corvette won on Facebook. The entire list is fascinating to take a look at.
It’s also a healthy reminder that, whether you’re in the automotive industry or not, your strengths on one social network might not translate to high performance on another, and that it is better to have an incredibly strong presence on one social network than have minimum impact on several.
8. National Geographic is the most popular magazine on social
The Association of Magazine Media recently released third-quarter stats for major magazines.
National Geographic was the clear leader, with 90 million total likes and followers across social platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and Google+.

9. 65% of US adults use social media
Marketing departments can’t ignore devoting resources to this no-longer-nascent arm of marketing any longer.
According to a recent Pew study, 65% of adults in the United States use social media, up from 46% in 2010 and just 7% in 2005.
Other juicy tidbits of note in the study:
- The overall number of social users has leveled off, but there continues to be growth among groups who were not early adopters, such as older Americans
- 18- to 29-year-olds are most likely to use social media and 90% of them use social media today, compared to 78% in 2010
- Women began using social media more than men in 2009 but the difference has shrunk in recent years
10. 78% of Facebook Q3 2015 ad revenue came from mobile
Facebook recently reported third-quarter earnings. Among the many interesting pieces of information we found out, this one really stood out.
More and more people are accessing social media almost exclusively from their phones. Make sure your social content — and the webpages you link to — are optimized for mobile.
