Excel Functions Every Community Manager Should Know: Even if Excel Terrifies You
I was a journalist for much of my 20s, so I felt pretty unprepared when I interviewed at Simply Measured in a conference room named =offset (In retrospect, I can’t be entirely sure I even knew what an =offset was. Some type of French cheese maybe?).
I sat down across from our CEO, Adam Schoenfeld (our company was a lot smaller then), and he asked what my favorite Excel function was. I racked my brain and finally said something like, “I like all the Excel functions equally and my greatest weakness is that I work too hard and never give up.”
Somehow I still got the job. I’d done a lot of social media consulting work over the previous years, and my writing background was solid, so I figured I’d be just fine. My first day of work, Adam said to me “Okay, lets do some marketing!” and put me to work on my first ever network study…I quickly realized how wrong I was.
Luckily, he paired me with super-analyst David Lukas.
As I pecked my way through data, trying to come up with something usable and create a legible chart about Instagram engagement among the 100 largest brands in the world, David took the wheel and started flying through functions and short keys I couldn’t repeat if you gave me a year to study them.
