How a Little Humor Helped The @CIA Score 140K Mentions
The @CIA isn’t a brand you’d expect to be a hit on social media. If I remember correctly, they’re a pretty hush-hush organization.
The CIA quietly dipped their toes into the social media pool by creating a Flickr account 3 years ago. However, since then, they’ve hopped on the Twitter and YouTube bandwagons. In June, they started their Twitter presence off with a bang, letting everyone know that the @CIA isn’t always serious and stuffy; they can actually be kind of funny.
We can neither confirm nor deny that this is our first tweet.

Yesterday, they struck again with a stream of hilarious Tweets, celebrating their first month on Twitter. The CIA decided to answer five top questions from the public, using the #twitterversary hashtag. The event led to a massive spike in the @CIA’s Twitter mentions, racking up 140K on the day of, and nearly 80k the day after. After the #twitterversary went viral, the genius of the social media manager was celebrated and rightfully so. For brands that are more serious, it can be difficult to keep your audience on social engaged. There’s no harm in lightening the mood with a little humor. Check out my favorite #twitterversary Tweet below!
No, we don’t know where Tupac is. #twitterversary

If anyone knows the whereabouts of this social media manager / comedian / my favorite person ever, please let me know so I can give them a high five. Well done, well done.
My name is Jade and I'm the Social Media Manager for Simply Measured. We can find common ground in Beyoncé and Chipotle burrito bowls.
