Sounders Tweets and Conversation Drivers

Sounders Tweets and Conversation Drivers Adam Schoenfeld Blogger Extraordinaire Simply Measured

We have a few Seattle Sounders fans at the office, prompting a little exploration into the Twitter data behind recent Sounders matches.
We tracked tweets containing “Sounders” during Thursday’s match against Dallas and Sunday versus Toronto. In both cases, we started tracking 15 minutes before the game and continued until after the final buzzer. Overall, the Dallas Game drew considerably more total twitter action and had higher peaks in activity.

Unpacking the activity around the Dallas game showed clear conversation drivers. At the time of each goal, activity spiked with the word “goal” driving the conversation. The terrible call by the refs near the end of the game generated another spike with mentioned “refs” or “call” driving the volume. It turns out that Twitter is a fabulous way to vent your frustration about poor officiating!

Overall ~15% of the tweets during the period tracked contained the word “ref” or “call.”
