New Scheduled Reports & New Data Collections

Starting today and continuing over the next several weeks, we’re going to be rolling out some exciting updates to the Simply Measured web application that simplify, enhance, and consolidate some of our most used functionality. If you’re a Simply Measured user, your reporting experience is about to get a lot easier, and a lot more powerful.

The first thing that you’ll notice is a redesigned Data Collection screen. We’ve unified its look and feel with the rest of our reporting flows and have brought access to actual sources (Twitter accounts, facebook fan pages, etc) within the collection into full view.

But that’s just for starters…the most exciting part of this update is a completely redesigned scheduled reports system.

This is an update that we’ve been working on for some time, and it drastically simplifies the way you plan your reporting.

Don’t freak out if you don’t see these changes immediately. We’ll be rolling this out slowly over the next several weeks, but feel free to reach out to us directly if you’d like advanced access, which we will begin making available next week.

Jeff Croft, the Product Designer in charge of re-imaging our reports system, says the following:

The primary goal of the Simply Measured scheduled reports overhaul was making the common cases as simple as possible. We knew that the current scheduled reports interface was in need of a makeover, but a simple face lift wasn’t going to be enough. Our challenge was to simultaneously increase the flexibility and robustness of our system, while also reducing complexity and making the experience easier for new users. To that end, we built a system where the vast majority of common cases can be handled simply by picking a report type, choosing a data collection, and picking the interval (day, hour, week, etc.) that you’d like the report to cover. In this case, reports will be received “when they’re ready,” which effectively means “as soon as we have the data to produce the complete report.” At the same time, we still support more advanced intervals, such as a weekly report that only covers Monday through Thursday, and more specific receipt frequency, such as a report delivered every Wednesday (rather than “when it’s ready”). The goal is simplicity for the common cases without disabling more advanced customization.

We’ve even added one time reports!

We also knew that we needed a more explicit and clear path to ensuring the right recipients are targeted for each scheduled report. We decided to forgo the idea of “followers” of a particular data collection and instead allow you to explicitly define the people who will receive a notification of each report as it’s generated. You can easily input the necessary recipients and edit them at any time.

Finally, we’ve added some visual cues to help you understand what each report is, when it’ll be delivered, and who will receive it. We even added clarity around expected delays in reporting on non-real-time data.

Beneath the form for adding any new scheduled report is a list of your existing reports, in a simple, clean, readable format, allowing you to view, edit, or delete any report schedules you’ve created. You can also filter these down by specific data collections.
